چکیده

Air pollution is a complex mixture of solid and liquid particles suspended in the air (the so called particulate matter) that vary in size, composition and origin, and different types of gases such as ozone (O 3 ), nitrogen oxides (NO 2 ), volatile organic carbons, and carbon monoxide (CO). In the recent years there has been considerable interest on the long and short-term effects of exposure to air pollution on human health. The growing industrialization and the progressive increase in the number of motor vehicles in large urban centers are the main causes of atmospheric pollution. Previous studies have indicated that the short-time increase in pollutants levels, particularly of particulate material, have generally increased the mortality rate both in the USA and in Europe. Two prospective cohort studies have also reported that the mortality risk was 26% greater for persons living in cities with elevated levels of air pollution. An important increase on the prevalence of asthma and other respiratory symptoms has been attributed to such environmental abnormalities. The adverse effects of particulate matter and other environmental pollutants are therefore well known and their effects on the respiratory and circulatory systems have generally been stressed. Ocular surface adverse effects of ambient levels of air pollution.

It is widely recognized today that outdoor air pollution can affect human health. Various chemical components that are present in ambient pollution may have an irritant effect on the mucous membranes of the body, particularly those of the respiratory tract. Much less attention has been focused on the adverse effect on the ocular surface, despite the fact that this structure is even more exposed...

Influence of the ventilatory mode on acute adverse effects and facial thermography after noninvasive ventilation

Objective: To compare the incidence and intensity of acute adverse effects and the variation in the temperature of facial skin by thermography after the use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV). Methods: We included 20 healthy volunteers receiving NIV via oronasal mask for 1 h. The volunteers were randomly divided into two groups according to the ventilatory mode: bilevel positive airway pressure...

Ambient Levels of Air Pollution Induce Goblet-Cell Hyperplasia in Human Conjunctival Epithelium

BACKGROUND Ocular mucosa is exposed constantly to the external environment, and chronic exposure to air pollution may affect the ocular surface. OBJECTIVE We assessed the effect of air pollution on the ocular surface by combining determinations of individual exposure and conjunctival impression cytology. METHODS A panel study was conducted with 29 volunteers recruited in two locations with ...

Exposures to airborne particulate matter and adverse perinatal outcomes: a biologically plausible mechanistic framework for exploring potential Exposição à matéria particulada aérea e efeitos perinatais adversos: referencial mecanístico biologicamente plausível para exploração de potenciais

This article has three objectives: to describe the biologically plausible mechanistic pathways by which exposure to particulate matter (PM) may lead to adverse perinatal outcomes of low birth weight (LBW), intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), and preterm delivery (PTD); review evidence showing that nutrition affects biologic pathways; and explain mechanisms by which nutrition may modify the ...

Pmn-18: The Effect of Ambient Air Pollution on Infertility

Development disorders may be arisen from the unavoidable maternal exposure to particulate air pollution during the prenatal life that can be affected not only periconceptional period but also postnatal life. A kind of chemical material categorized as air pollutants are present in the urine, blood and semen of exposed men and may decline sperm count and affect sperm quality. Environment toxic ca...
